Claims process
Independent medical examination
An independent medical examination, or IME, is an evaluation by a physician chosen and paid for by the insurer rather than by the injured person, used to assess injuries and the treatment claimed.
"Independent" describes who selected the doctor, not their neutrality. IME reports frequently conclude that treatment was excessive or that the claimant reached MMI earlier than their treating physician says.
Attend, be accurate, and do not exaggerate. Tell your attorney beforehand and follow their guidance.
