Comparison

How do I compare lawsuit funding companies?

Ask every funder for the total dollar amount you would repay at six, twelve, eighteen and twenty-four months on the exact amount you need, in writing, with every fee itemized. Comparing those four numbers is the only reliable method, because advertised rates use different periods, different compounding and different fee structures that are not comparable on their face.

Six specific questions cut through most of the confusion. Does the charge compound? How often does the rate step — monthly or every six months? Is there a hard cap on total repayment, and at what multiple? Are fees inside or outside that cap? Is the advertised rate the rate everyone gets, or a floor for the strongest cases? And what is the complete list of fees?

That last one catches more money than people expect. A rate comparison can look close and still be wrong by hundreds of dollars once a closing fee, a per-advance document filing fee and a monthly servicing charge are added — and those are often disclosed in the contract rather than on the website. Ask for the fee schedule as a list, and ask whether anything is charged if the case runs longer than expected.

Be careful with published rankings. Almost every "best lawsuit funding companies" list is written by a funding company about its competitors, and they contradict each other on the same firms' review counts and ratings.

A funder that will not put the payoff figures in writing before you sign has told you what you need to know.
