Underinsured motorist coverage
Underinsured motorist coverage is part of your own auto policy that pays when an at-fault driver's insurance is insufficient to cover your injuries.
Uninsured motorist coverage does the same where the at-fault driver has no insurance at all, or in a hit-and-run.
Making this claim puts you in an adversarial position with your own insurer, which surprises people and often changes the tone and length of the negotiation.
