How are settlement funds disbursed?
Settlement money goes first into your attorney's trust account. From there the firm pays the attorney fee and case costs, then medical liens and any funding liens, and the remaining balance is disbursed to you — usually within a few weeks of the funds clearing.
Your attorney is required to hold the money in trust and to account for every deduction. You are entitled to a written settlement statement showing exactly where each dollar went.
Lien negotiation is what usually causes the delay. Medical providers and health insurers frequently accept less than their stated balance, and getting them there takes time — but it puts more money in your pocket.
The Get Lit Money lien is repaid from the trust account at this stage, before your share is disbursed. The figure is whatever the published schedule says for the period in which the case resolved.
